Havana Miramar & Playa Casa Particular

Just 16 km west of the old city, but aesthetically worlds apart, Miramar has all the appearance of a wealthy suburb. Lying on the west side of the Río Almendares it is easily reached by bus, via two road tunnels or bridges. Easy on the eye, it's a relaxed strolling ground of broad avenues, lined with early 20th-century art nouveau mansions, graceful fountains and romantic parks.

While Miramar may be low on tourist magnets, it's a soothing antidote to the frenetic pace of the old town. Home to Cuba's upper crust, and banking the lion’s share of the bucks sent over from the family in Miami, Miramar's leisure pursuits have a more aspirational European feel than other more gritty areas of the city. Its varied crop of restaurants and paladares are well worth shelling out the cab fare for.

While sleek, brushed steel seems the order of the day for the district's modern architectural flourishes, the nightlife remains quintessentially Havana. Raunchy discos, great, live salsa venues and flamboyant nightclubs, including the internationally renowned Tropicana cabaret show, can be found here.

Not my favorite spot, but you have a private apartment with a bathroom and sort of a kitchen. Bathroom was ok, bed felt like an air mattress and an overall musty smell. They demanded payment immediately, and didn't speak any English so they couldn't help us much. No food available that we know of and for 40Cuc a night it seemed a tad expensive for what you got. Plus, it isn't really that close to anything except the international embassies.
