we were 3 gals-we stayed at Solymar. my guess it was one of the best places to stay at b/c its very close to town-walking distance. I strongly recommend dancing at Calle 62-dubbed this name b/c the 'outdoor' bar is at 62nd street and the outdoor dancing/band starts around 10 or 10.30 until midnight. you can youtube calle 62. We heard of clubs getting overcrowded so we avoided those. we made a deal with the 'driveer' of a carriage for 15 cuc total to go and come back within 2 hours to the biggest Varadero market at 15th street. I went crazy buying art and musical instruments (still practicing the bongo). our jeep safari was great, lunch at Rancho Gaviota-we didn't see the ailing donkey though, and we hired a driver for 30 pesos, which wasn't arranged properly b/w the tour co. and transgaviota, so somehow Pedro ended up being our driver and he lead the caravan of Jeeps...awesome!

I only stayed for 10 days, but must admit, it was my best holiday ever. It’s like travelling back in time. White sandy beaches of Varadero, nice food an entertainment in hotel Sol Palmeras. Instead of paying for trip to La Habana with a organized trip from hotel, we decided to take a Viazul bus from Varadero to La Habana and walked all over the magnificent City. We stayed where we wanted, how long we wanted, absolutely suburb. Cuba might change soon, so make sure you see it while its still free!!!

I took the Jeep Safari tour in Varadero and all in all I would say the experience was a good one. The snorkeling was great, as were the caves and river cruise. However when we stopped for lunch and horseback riding I noticed a donkey that required medical attention. It had a huge gash around it's neck from a rope that was too tight and had not been removed. I complained at the hotel tour desk and she advised me to write. I have gone so far as to have the letter translated into Spanish for easier communication but have not successfully faxed it yet and I can't find the tour companies e-mail. Take the tour but complain if you see this is still going on because we just can't allow this to happen to animals without trying to stop it.

I still can't believe that I jumped out of a really old, Russian plane at 8,000 feet in Cuba, but WOW!
Words cannot describe how great it feels. The plane ride up is really scary, as is the part where you have to jump from the plane, but if you can somehow get through that part without having a heart attack, the reward is absolutely unbelievable.
The cost is CUC150, plus CUC30-45 if you want to buy the video (negotiable), but the memory really is priceless. Definitely worth every penny

Rent motorbike and do a tour of peninsula. But don't take too long since your behind will hate you. That is the reason why my plan to visit Matanzas (40km distance) was dropped. Price is 9 CUC hour if rented in resort, 6 CUC hour in Varadero.

there are two Jeep Safari, one is more expensive and less fun, pick the cheaper one, pay the US to drive one of their 4x4 jeeps through rough terrain and local towns. it's an all day adventure, they take you to a cave where you go snorkeling, a beach where you go snorkeling (don't forget to buy a banana leaf hat for Using (content).50) another under cave with 100% humidity. Make sure you drive through the mud puddles!
